Edenderry students shine in National Poetry Competition
Edenderry's Oaklands Community College is celebrating the outstanding achievements of two of its students, Precious Omoyayi from Fifth Year and Anna Nieznanska from Sixth Year, in the recent National Write a Poem Competition. Precious Omoyayi secured a remarkable second place in the Senior Category, while Anna Nieznanska received Highly Commended in the same category, showcasing their exceptional talent and creativity.
The Oide Literacy and Senior Cycle English Team, overseeing the competition, announced the results for the 2023-2024 competition, revealing a staggering number of entries: 398 in the Junior Cycle category and 276 in the Senior Cycle category. The overwhelming response underscores the enthusiasm and dedication of students towards the art of poetry.
The quality of submissions impressed the adjudicators, who faced the arduous task of selecting winners from a pool of entries that demonstrated profound insight into poetry and its diverse forms, as well as a striking originality of thought. The competition showcased the students' keen understanding of poetic expression and their ability to explore a wide array of themes, including education, childhood, adolescence, mortality, sport, nature, love, and war.
The Oide Literacy and Senior Cycle English Team commended the teachers for their commitment to nurturing students' creative thinking through authentic writing experiences. Their efforts have undoubtedly played a crucial role in fostering a culture of literary excellence at Oaklands Community College.
