Banagher Marina masterplan published

Cllr Clare Claffey has warmly welcomed the publication of the Banagher Marina and Environs Masterplan by Offaly County Council.

The plan, which was formally launched by Cathaoirleach Eddie Fitzpatrick at the Crank House in Banagher on Friday, represents the first stage in the regeneration of this important area of the town. The next step will involve a planning process for enhancement of the marina area. The Offaly County Council regeneration team has also recently obtained approval to commence the conservation plan for the Shannon Hotel site beside the Marina.

Cllr Claffey said “Banagher has so much potential, it’s a beautiful town with many natural amenities including the River Shannon. This regeneration plan for the Marina will be so important for the future development of the town. Coming at the same time as the upgrade of swimming pool on the other side of the river and the planned conservation of the Shannon Hotel, the works will represent a substantial investment in the public realm and amenities at this important part of the town. I have been working with Offaly County Council on these plans since my election in 2019, and I will continue to work with the council regeneration team and my fellow elected representatives to ensure that the plans are implemented to deliver real benefits for residents and visitors alike”.

Plans are also underway to plan and invest in conservation and remedial works at the Shannon Hotel, a prominent site close to the Marina. The Shannon Hotel was once a beautiful, thriving building. Following representations by Cllr Claffey, the hotel was purchased by Offaly County Council and hopes are now high for a positive future for the building.

Cllr Claffey said the Masterplan for Banagher Marina and Environs was drawn up in partnership with local stakeholders including Banagher Development Group, local businesses and residents. She welcomed the co-operation between the local authority, local development groups, businesses and the wider community that led to the success of the Masterplan.

“This plan is great news for the town and I’m delighted to be working with Council officials and the Banagher community to progress the upgrading of our town. This plan is a crucial first step in the regenerate of the town and make Banagher and the surrounding area a more attractive place to live, work and visit.” Claffey continued.

The project was funded by the Rural Regeneration Fund – a central government fund, with matching funding from the Local Authority.
