Michael Deegan

Michael Deegan (Non-Party), Birr

We sent a questionnaire to all 15 candidates running in the Birr Electoral Area in the forthcoming Offaly County Council election. The responses were published in print in the Offaly Independent last Friday.

NAME: Michael Deegan

ADDRESS: Military Road, Crinkill, Birr.

PARTY: Non-Party

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

Healthcare, especially for young people and young children. I have a very special interest in services for children with autism.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

It was in my thoughts for over 50 years.

With Tom Enright there and with his good daughter Olwyn there, and with Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, I never got the opportunity, and I couldn't run against any of them because we're all great friends. I'm probably the oldest candidate ever to run. I'm 80 years of age.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

I would really like to see the Midoc service return to Birr. I'm also very concerned about the terrible, tragic tragedies on our roads, particularly over the last few years. I feel more should be done by the Government. I feel more road safety signs should be erected.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

Michael D Higgins. I think he is a great president. Mary McAleese; I really admire her as well, and of course I have to admire Pope Francis also.
