MEP Cowen rules out run for presidency
Barry Cowen has ruled out a bid for the presidency of Ireland, saying he is "totally committed" to his current role in the European Parliament.
The Offaly MEP suffered a health scare a little over a week ago, and, as he recovers, he has been sharing a series of interview clips that were recorded previously with members of his staff.
In one of the clips, which he posted on social media on Sunday, he is asked: "What's the story with the presidency? Have you been linked yet?"
"No," he replies. "I think I'm one of the few MEPs that is totally committed to the role to which I was elected, without being distracted by wanting to be considered for the role of president.
"No reflection on my colleagues, but they are being sidetracked by speculation, and the sooner various parties begin a process of nomination, and put that to bed..."
The former Laois-Offaly TD went on to pay tribute to President Michael D Higgins, whose time in office will come to an end later this year after 14 years in Áras an Uachtaráin.
"It's a very vital and important role, and Michael D Higgins has been very well-respected, and well-loved and liked across the country, and has done the job more than effectively," said Mr Cowen.
"I would hope that whomever (the next president) is, from whatever side or party, that they will continue in the same vein as he."
