Tullamore College project Grass Sheets placed 3rd in Bord na Mona Recycling Secondary Schools Challenge.

Tullamore College's top prize in Bord na Móna Recycling Secondary Schools Challenge

Tullamore College has placed third in the Bord na Móna Recycling Secondary Schools Challenge.

After presenting their projects and fielding questions from a panel of expert judges Bord na Móna Recycling is excited to announce the first of three winners in the inaugural Secondary Schools Challenge.

Every year, 400 tonnes of grass in Ireland ends up in brown bins. Cillian and Ryan sought to change this by making a sustainable future product.

Addressing SDG Goals 12 and 13 they made sustainable paper using grass, water, and okra, and created wildflower seed pouches with biodegradable labels and water-soluble glue. They also ran craft workshops and educated their community on rethinking grass disposal.

The judges commended the outside-the-box thinking shown, product range, initiative video and use of social media and how they spread awareness and educated younger students.

They also noted how this project is another great example of a potential ‘disruptor’ product, from a school who also boasts another Top 10 Finalist in thriving mini company 'Rejuvenate Design House'.

Tullamore College is fortunate to have a student body which fully embraces the ethos and ambition behind the UN SDGs.

A prize sum of €1000 is awarded to this school.
