Sign language tours due to be introduced at Clonmacnoise
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced a series of inclusive tours for the sign language community at several of its nationwide sites, including Clonmacnoise and Portumna Castle.
"These tours are part of an exciting initiative to make heritage sites accessible to all," said the OPW, in a statement.
It added that visitors to Athenry Castle, Clonmacnoise, Dublin Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Portumna Castle and Rathfarnham Castle would be able to "enjoy a unique experience led by an experienced guide accompanied by an Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreter, highlighting the rich history and hidden gems" at these locations.
Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, said: "We are delighted to offer these inclusive tours at OPW locations across the country.
"It is important for us to provide accessible and engaging experiences for all visitors, and we are committed to expanding our offering of ISL interpreted tours and Alzheimer’s and Dementia friendly tours at heritage sites across the country."
The OPW said the tours were free of charge, but that spaces were limited. Visitors are advised to contact the site and book in advance to avoid disappointment.
In addition to these tours, the OPW, in collaboration with Transport for Ireland (TFI), is offering free access to selected heritage sites for senior citizens using the TFI Local Link service throughout the month of May.
These initiatives aim to make our cultural heritage more assessable to all. For more information, see: www.heritageireland.ie.
