Local TD calls for greater promotion of Irish produce at home and abroad

Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen, has called for stronger and more strategic promotion of Irish produce both domestically and internationally, highlighting the vital role of agriculture and food in Ireland’s rural economy.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Clendennen said: “Agriculture and food are central to Ireland’s rural economy. Irish produce is held in high regard globally, thanks to years of investment in branding, marketing, and trade promotion. We must keep that momentum going.”

He praised the innovation shown by farmers and food producers across the country and acknowledged the key role played by Bord Bia in supporting their success. He stressed the need for continued international promotion through trade missions and global campaigns, but also a renewed focus on domestic visibility.

“I believe we must act in three key areas: expanding global promotion, supporting local producers with practical measures, and encouraging Irish retailers to prioritise homegrown goods,” he said.

Deputy Clendennen also raised concerns about existing trade barriers, citing alcohol labelling regulations and export imbalances.

“We export three times more to Germany than to France, despite their similar populations. That disparity needs to be better understood so we can unlock untapped potential,” he added.

He also proposed a new measure for greater transparency of country of origin in the retail sector, a clear register of Irish, EU, and non-EU produce on supermarket shelves, to help consumers make informed choices and strengthen support for local farmers.

Deputy Clendennen concluded by reaffirming his commitment to ensuring Irish produce remains globally competitive and recognised as best in class.
