Cowen welcomes strategy to unlock development potential of region
Fianna Fáil MEP for Midlands North-West, Barry Cowen, has welcomed a new five-year strategy for economic and social development across the region.
MEP Cowen has described the Western Development Commission’s (WDC) strategy, 'Unlocking Potential, Driving Change 2025–2029', as a “bold and grounded plan” for unleashing the region’s full potential and pledged to support its aim to secure €15 million in EU funding.
MEP Cowen said the strategy’s focus on innovation, balanced growth and renewable energy matches the key priorities for the Midlands North-West region and aligns closely with the work he is already doing at the EU level.
The WDC’s aim to channel €15 million in EU funds into research, enterprise and competitiveness over the next five years was described by MEP Cowen as “both ambitious and achievable - if the right support is provided, including by the region’s MEPs.”
MEP Cowen also welcomed the major emphasis placed on offshore renewable energy off the west coast in the strategy, and agreed the region has the potential to become a leader in Europe’s green transition.
“This is a smart and grounded plan. The WDC is doing what every state agency should do — think long-term, act locally and deliver for people. I fully support this strategy and will work to support its objective of €15 million in EU funding it sets out to secure.
“To unlock the full potential of our regions, it’s vital that Government, State agencies and local communities work in tandem — with the support of MEPs. I’ll continue to play my part to ensure the West is front and centre in EU policy and funding decisions," MEP Cowen said.
