Local TD bids "fond farewell" to retiring Coláiste Choilm teachers

A fond farewell has been bid to well-liked Coláiste Choilm teachers Liam Ó hOistín and Ray O'Donovan last week as the pair retired from their positions in the Tullamore school.

Paying tribute, Tony McCormack TD said they will leave big shoes to fill.

"Liam, a proud Connemara man, always wore his roots on his sleeve. He had a natural instinct for looking out for the underdog and guided countless young men with wisdom, fairness, and heart. An outdoorsman at heart, he loved bringing classes on activity weekends and outdoor adventures – opening students’ eyes to a different way of learning and living.

"Ray, a proud West Cork man, had a gentle, steady presence and made a huge impact in quieter ways. He headed up the school’s annual trip to India – an incredible initiative that not only helped those in need abroad, but deeply changed the perspective of the young men lucky enough to travel with him.

"The two lads also led successful football teams over the years, with Liam also managing basketball teams – always with a no-nonsense but fair and respectful approach. They mightn’t want to admit it, but I’ll say it anyway – both Liam and Ray taught me, and we’ve always got on. I’m proud to have been one of their students and even prouder to wish them – and their families – all the very best in the next chapter.

"Go raibh míle maith agaibh – and thank you for your service to the young people of Offaly. The legacy both have left is unmeasurable."
