WATCH: Peat for Prosperity trials centre on Shinrone farm

The EU Just Transition project titled Peat for Prosperity was launched at a farm in Shinrone recently.

Regan’s Farm in Shinrone is at the centre of the paludiculture trials as part of the project, which explore the potential of growing crops on rewetted peatlands.

As part of the project, Green Restoration Ireland is offering free, hands-on support to farmers, farm advisors, and the wider community as to how to access new income streams from peatlands, in particular abandoned cutover.

"What we've done is we've shown everyone around the project site, had some excellent farm food, and had some really interesting presentations," said Dr. Doug McMillan, leading researcher for Peat for Prosperity.

"This is a very clever solution to help people that work the land gain economically," added Paul Leadbitter, North Pennines National Landscape.
