New Tullamore hospital programme means joint replacement patients can go home the same day

The HSE said certain patients undergoing joint replacement surgery at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore will experience faster and more comfortable recovery thanks to the hospital's innovative Day Case Arthroplasty Programme.

Described as one of the first programmes of its kind in Ireland, the HSE said this patient-centred approach aims to revolutionise how knee and hip replacements are delivered in Tullamore for suitable patients - minimising their hospital stay and maximising recovery in the comfort of home.

Day case arthroplasty allows eligible patients to return home on the same day as their surgery. The HSE said this model "not only reduces disruption to daily life but also supports faster healing in familiar surroundings."

It added that patients benefit from shorter hospital stays and returning home to rest in comfort. They can also experience improved recovery, with better sleep, nutrition, and reduced exposure to hospital-acquired infections.

Lower stress levels, a quicker return to normal activities, and a reduced risk of complications are other benefits of the programme.

Fiona Brady, a recent patient, praised this approach, saying: "I'm a huge fan of day case surgery.

"I felt so comfortable recovering at home and slept better. The preparation beforehand made all the difference. I believe all the preparation prior to the surgery, ensured things went smoothly.

"I know that doing the pre-planned physio a month prior to the surgery, prepared me for the work I would have to do post-op. Eight weeks post-op, my life has been completely transformed—I’m pain-free and feeling amazing."

Fiona credited the success of her recovery to the dedication of the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore team, including Mr Khalid Merghani, Dr Mohan, Ms Dearbhail Foy and their teams, Ms July Jacob, OPD staff, Allen ward staff and Theatre staff, saying; "I am eternally grateful for your professionalism, compassion, and excellent communication."

The HSE success of this programme lies in its holistic care planning and strong ethos of teamwork.

"We're are excited to see a real shift," said Dearbhail Foy, Arthroplasty Nurse Specialist. "Patients are more motivated, more confident, and more engaged. They know what to expect and feel supported every step of the way."

Mr Khalid Merghani, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, highlighted the clinical benefits.

"Minimally invasive techniques like the direct anterior approach for hips and subvastus approach for knees preserve muscle, reduce pain, and enable faster mobilisation," he said. "With computer assistance and robotic navigation, we're achieving greater precision and better outcomes."

Dr Mugawar Mohan, Consultant Anaesthetist, added: "Day case arthroplasty is not only safe but also cost-effective. With the right patient selection and enhanced recovery protocols, it’s a win-win for patients and healthcare systems."

The HSE added that every patient's journey was tracked through the Irish National Orthopaedic Register (INOR) in order to "ensure transparency and continuous improvement".
