Rhode's Evie to present RTE traditional music programme
An accomplished traditional musician from Offaly has been given the honour of presenting the first programme in a seven part series which gets underway on RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta next week.
In a unique collaboration between RTE and the University of Limerick (UL), Evie Denehan from Rhode will be the first presenter of Ar Bhruach na Sionainne, a music and chat show presented by students from the University of Limerick on Tuesday afternoon next, July 1, at 1.30pm.
The seven part series showcases traditional music, performed and presented by the students themselves. In addition to presenting the first programme on Tuesday afternoon next, Evie Denehan, who plays the concertina, will chat with her fellow students from UL and showcase their traditional music talents. The programme will be presented by a different student each week.
The Rhode musician is a current student in the University of Limerick studying for a BA in Irish music at the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance. Having always harboured a great passion for Irish music, she began playing music with her local Comhaltas branch when she was just seven years old, This led her to take part in many Fleadhs at county, provincial and national level. She has also played in grúpa ceoils and céilí bands at U12 and U15 level over the years.
Evie began her music career as a seven year old on the tin whistle, but she admits that, "after much experimentation" she found her "absolute favourite" the concertina, three years later. "I have already made so many acquaintances and friends, not to mention the exposure to professional musicians and tutors in the Irish music scene and I am looking forward to what the next few years will bring during my degree in UL" she said
The musicians in the first programme being presented on Raidió na Gaeltachta next Tuesday by Evie Denehan will include: Alex Gregg (whistle & fiddle), Sonny Cahill (flute), Jamie Troy (guitar & bodhrán), Robyn Wadsworth (fiddle), Alaina Majkrzak (banjo), Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh (song), Andrea Brennan (concertina), Ciarán O’Connell (accordian) and Simon Crehan (guitar).
The first programme of Ar Bhruach na Sionainne, presented by Rhode's Evie Denehan, will air on RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta at 1.30pm on Tuesday afternoon next at 1.30pm.
