Over 60 Offaly residents become Irish citizens

A total of 63 Westmeath and Roscommon residents became Irish citizens in the most recent Irish citizenship ceremonies.

The ceremonies took place on Monday, June 23, and Tuesday, June 24, at the INEC Killarney.

Over 7,500 people from across the country gained citizenship over the two days, including 63 from Offaly.

Candidates from 143 countries were invited to attend 7 citizenship ceremonies at the INEC Killarney.

The top ten countries included in the ceremony were India (1888); Brazil (817); United Kingdom (516); Philippines (480); Romania (470); Poland (396); South Africa (318); Nigeria (257); China (Including Hong Kong) (234); and the United States Of America (224).

The Edge, from U2, was among those conferred across the two days.

“The ceremony was very moving, the room was full of so many people, everyone from different backgrounds, with different stories. It was a privilege to be a part of it and to experience the collective joy as we all became citizens together," he said.

"I moved to Ireland with my parents as a baby, so it’s not a stretch to say that this is long overdue! I have always felt Irish, Ireland will always be home to me and I’m so grateful for that."

Minister of State with responsibility for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice, Niall Collins, said: "Citizenship is not only a right but a symbol of shared responsibility and mutual trust. These new citizens now have a place in shaping the future of Ireland.

"I sincerely congratulate each of our new Irish citizens. This is a proud and memorable day for them, their families, and for the whole country.”
