Offaly project included in funding for salmon and trout initiatives
A project seeking to encourage biodiversity on the River Barrow tributaries in Offaly has been awarded €20,000 in funding from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
It was one of 21 projects in 14 different counties which are to share €771,000 in funding from the State body to help restore salmon and trout stocks, and their habitats.
The River Barrow tributaries project in Offaly, is to be carried out in collaboration with Offaly County Council.
The IFI said the project would involve "site-specific measures" to "encourage natural river processes and biodiversity".
A further €20,000 was granted for works elsewhere on the River Barrow, at Dunrally / Monasterevin in Laois and Kildare.
Barry Fox Head of Operations with IFI, said: "With these grants, Inland Fisheries Ireland is working collaboratively with statutory and non-statutory groups to create resilient habitats for future generations of fish.
"The projects include those that are of national strategic importance, and those that aim to improve damaged habitats in regional catchments failing to meet their conservation limits."
The River Barrow - the second longest river in Ireland - originates in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
