Minister visits Edenderry Canoe Club after planning permission boost

Minister of State for Sport Charlie McConalogue visited Edenderry Canoe Club this morning.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment for the club, which this week received planning permission for a brand-new clubhouse and modern facilities.

Organised by local TD Tony McCormack, the visit was part of a tour of local sports clubs across Offaly.

The atmosphere at the club today was one of celebration and optimism. Having operated out of containers for years, the members and committee were overjoyed at the grant of planning permission and eager to share their story with the Minister.

Minister McConalogue met with club representatives to discuss their journey so far, their plans for the new development, and the potential to secure funding through the next round of the Sports Capital Grant programme, which is due to open in January 2026.

He expressed his admiration for the club’s determination and its role in making sport accessible to all.

"Water-based sports like canoeing are incredibly inclusive," the Minister said. "They provide a unique opportunity for people who might not participate in traditional team sports. It’s clear that this club brings joy and a sense of belonging to its members and the wider community.”

Local TD Tony McCormack praised the efforts of the club and its volunteers, saying: “This new facility will be a huge boost not only for Edenderry but for North Offaly as a whole. The club already draws members from across the region, and with improved facilities, it will go from strength to strength.”
