€275 billion infrastructure plan will drive growth for Offaly - McCormack

The largest capital investment in the history of the State is now underway — and Offaly is poised to benefit. That’s according to local TD Tony McCormack, a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and the National Development Plan, who says the €275 billion plan to 2035 will transform Ireland’s infrastructure and position the country for long-term growth.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” Deputy McCormack said. “We’re investing in the roads, water, energy and public transport systems that will support jobs, attract investment, and make towns like Tullamore, Birr and Edenderry better places to live and work.”

Recalling his own experience growing up, Deputy McCormack reflected on how far Ireland has come:

“When I was younger, our national infrastructure was holding the country back. You only had to travel north to see the quality of roads they had to realise what we were missing.

"That has now turned on its head — and with this scale of investment, we’re will push further ahead. Imagine how far we can go with a modern, connected, efficient infrastructure system. It will make Ireland an even better place to do business, live and enjoy life.”

A central goal of the National Development Plan (NDP) is to ensure balanced regional development — making sure areas like Offaly aren’t left behind.

“This isn’t just a Dublin plan,” Deputy McCormack said. “It’s about improving life for people across the country — and that includes Offaly. Whether it’s upgrading road networks, developing clean energy hubs, or improving access to high-speed broadband, this plan is designed to support strong regional communities.”

The NDP will also support enterprise hubs, rural innovation, and town centre regeneration — key areas of opportunity for the Midlands, Deputy McCormack noted, further highlighting the establishment of both a delivery division in the Department of Public Expenditure, and the Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce, to drive progress across sectors

“We are focused on value for money, timely delivery, and high-impact results,” said Deputy McCormack. “The days of plans gathering dust are over. We’re getting things done — and Offaly will see the benefits.”

At a time of global uncertainty, the National Development Plan brings long-term vision and clarity, he said.

“This is about securing Ireland’s future,” Deputy McCormack added. “Stronger infrastructure means a stronger economy, stronger regions, and stronger communities. I’m committed to making sure Offaly is front and centre in that future.”
