Alex Dunne was demoted from his first place finish at last weekend's F2 Grand Prix race in Spa Belgium

Spa demotion for Dunne as he slips down F2 Championship standings

The chequered flag feeling of elation was shortlived for Offaly F2 driver Alex Dunne when he was demoted from his winning position at a rain-soaked Spa Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Clonbollogue native initially secured first place in what was a rain soaked race but was subsequently penalised and demoted to tenth place for failing to engage the start set-up procedure.

The win, which would have been his third victory on the F2 Grand Prix circuit this season, would have placed Dunne 15 points clear of his rivals in the race for the driver's championship but the junior McLaren driver now is placed fourth in the standings, ten points adrift of Leonardo Fornaroli who is in pole position to claim the main accolade.

There are five rounds of F2 Grand Prix competition remaining before the concluding race at Yas Island in December, Dunne having won two Grand Prix races this year in Bahrain and at Imola.
