Substantial funding allocated for upgrade of rural roads in Offaly

Further substantial funding has been allocated towards the upgrade of rural roads and laneways in Offaly.

Under the Government’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS), a total allocation of €1,050,901 for the enhancement of the county's rural roads has been confirmed for 2025.

This funding includes an additional €515,497 announced this week by Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary TD, bringing the national total under the scheme to over €30 million — the highest annual investment since the LIS was reintroduced in 2017.

The allocation has been welcomed by two Offaly Dáil representatives who described the announcement as a "major boost for Offaly's rural communities".

Fianna Fail TD said the scheme supports local residents, farmers, and landowners who rely on non-public roads that are often essential for daily life but fall outside local authority maintenance.

“I’m pleased to see this increased allocation for Offaly, and I’ll be working with the council to ensure the funding is used effectively," Deputy McCormack said.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael TD, John Clendennen said that the investment will significantly improve safety, connectivity, and quality of life in rural parts of our county.

“These roads may not be on the official map, but for many in Offaly, they are the only way in and out of their homes and farms," Deputy Clendennen said.

Both Dáil representatives encouraged landowners and residents in Offaly to engage with Offaly County Council and ensure swift completion of road improvements.

The Local Improvement Scheme provides funding for the improvement of private and non-public roads that give access to homes, farms, and local amenities. Roads eligible under the scheme typically serve multiple landowners and are often used for agricultural or community purposes.

The works funded under the scheme must be completed by the end of 2025.
