Profile of a parkrunner: Meet Emily
Meet Emily Farrell from Edenderry who has been taking part in Mountlucas parkrun, as a participant and a volunteer, since November 2024.
When did you first complete a parkrun?
My first parkrun was the 300th Mountlucas parkrun! I’d wanted to join in for ages, but as a then non-runner I was a bit nervous about taking the plunge. The milestone event felt like the perfect excuse to blend in with the celebrations—and it turned out to be such a fun and welcoming experience!
What is your favourite thing about parkrun?
Honestly, my favourite “thing” about parkrun isn’t a thing at all—it’s Mary Dunne! She has this amazing way of greeting everyone with a smile and making you feel instantly at home, whether you’re a first-timer or a regular. I also love that parkrun is so inclusive—whether it’s your 1st or 250th, and whether you cross the line in 20 minutes or an hour, everyone’s welcome and celebrated.
What is your favourite parkrun memory?
I actually have two favourites! The first was the only time I’ve ever managed to run the full 5km—crossing the finish line to see my husband waiting and cheering me on was such a proud moment. The second was my very first parkrun tourism adventure, a girls’ weekend in Belfast where we laughed, explored, and of course, ran! Both hold such special memories for me in completely different ways.
What words best describe Mountlucas parkrun?
I’d describe Mountlucas parkrun as welcoming, encouraging, and fun—with a real sense of belonging and inclusion… and often a little bit windy!
