Offaly service offers free training to hair and beauty workers to help combat domestic violence

Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service (ODVSS) is calling on local hairdressers, beauticians, barbers, holistic practitioners, and other professionals in the beauty and wellness industries to participate in a free online training session.

Entitled 'Dyeing to Talk', the training will take place via Zoom on Monday, October 13, from 11am to 12.30pm, and aims to equip participants with the skills and confidence to recognise signs of domestic abuse and provide safe, supportive pathways for clients who may be experiencing it.

For many people experiencing domestic abuse, a visit to a salon or beauty treatment may be one of the few times they are alone and feel safe to speak freely.

Professionals in these roles often build trusting relationships with clients and may notice signs of distress or subtle changes in behaviour.

Through the Dyeing to Talk programme, ODVSS will guide participants in understanding how to: Identify signs of domestic abuse in a sensitive and non-intrusive way, safely support and listen to someone who may disclose abuse, provide information about available resources and services, and contribute to creating a community that does not tolerate abuse and actively supports victims and survivors.

Domestic abuse is a serious issue that affects every community. By engaging local businesses and professionals, ODVSS believes we can build a stronger network of support and safety for victims and survivors.

Anne Clarke, Manager of ODVSS, said: "The fight to end domestic abuse cannot be won by support services alone. Hairdressers, beauticians, barbers, and others play a vital role because they are often the trusted people victims see regularly.

"Through this training, we are giving them the tools to respond safely and appropriately, helping to create a community that stands together against abuse."

This free training is part of ODVSS’s ongoing commitment to creating a pathway to safety for victims and survivors, while working towards the ultimate goal of eradicating domestic abuse in our communities.
