Offaly's Alex Dunne will return to F2 action at the Baku Grand Prix on the weekend of Spetember 19-21

Dunne's F2 aspirations suffer major blow in Monza

The F2 championship aspirations of Offaly's Alex Dunne suffered a major blow at the weekend when he failed to win a point from two races at the Italian Grand Prix.

Driving on the famed Monza track, the Clonbollogue native crashed out of the F2 feature race on Sunday following a collision with Red Bull Junior's Arvid Lindblad.

Saturday's sprint race also saw the 19-year-old fail to win F2 drivers' championship points, current leader Leonardo Fornaroli claiming the spoils.

The McLaren development driver remains fifth in the standings but is now 50 points behind Italy's Fornaroli with three rounds remaining.

The low of Dunne's weekend zero points haul was in sharp contrast to his Friday afternoon experience when, driving for McLaren, he had a 16th place finish in his second Formula 1 practice session.

Dunne was unable to repeat his fourth place practice session finish achieved at the Austrian Grand Prix but gained more valuable time at the highest level of international motor racing.

Dunne's next F2 outing is at the Baku Grand Prix in Azerbaijan the weekend of September 19-21.
