Huge shock at sudden passing of young Ballinahown man

The close-knit community of Ballinahown on the Westmeath border with Offaly is united in shock and sadness this week following the sudden passing of 24-year old Jack McDonnell.

The much-loved young man, who was the only child of Stephanie and Frank McDonnell from Clonderrig, passed away at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore yesterday (Sunday, September 28) following a medical emergency.

Tributes have been paid to the deceased from two local sporting clubs with whom he was a former player.

Doon GAA club said it was "deeply shocked" and "saddened" to hear of the untimely and sudden passing of "our young member" and "former player of the club", Jack McDonnell.

"Jack was a bright and kind young man in our community, whom people had great admiration and affection for, especially the group of his close friends, a number of whom are our current players. His passing has left a void in our club, our community and the wide circle of all who knew Jack.

"Our flags have been lowered to half mast in a mark of respect to Jack.

"We send our heartfelt and sincere condolences to Jacks parents, Frank and Stephanie and his extended family and friends at this time".

Ballinahown FC said Jack's sudden death would leave a "massive void" for his family and friends".

"Our hearts are broken with the sudden death of our former underage player Jack McDonnell. His loss will leave a massive void for his family and friends.

"Our deepest and sincerest condolences to Frank and Stephanie, Jack's parents, and to his extended family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. May they find strength and comfort in the memories they shared with Jack".

Predeceased by his adoring grandparents Mary and Tom and granddad Christy, the Iarnród Éireann employee is forever loved and deeply missed by his parents Stephanie and Frank, Nanny Chrissie, girlfriend Jenna, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

The remains of the late Jack McDonnell will repose at his residence in Clonderrig, Ballinahown (N37 RY10) on Wednesday and Thursday evening, October 1 and 2, from 4pm to 8pm.

Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Friday, October 4, at 11am in St. Colmcille's Church, Ballinahown, followed by burial in Coosan Cemetery.
