A €3.4 million plan has been outlined for the redevelopment of Daingean’s historic courthouse, currently used as the town hall.

The project is aiming to preserve the building’s heritage while creating a versatile space for social, cultural, and educational use going forward.

The Daingan Town Hall Conservation Masterplan will be discussed at a public meeting organised by Offaly County Council in the hall this evening (Thursday).

The proposals for the premises include establishing a fully-flexible main hall, able to accommodate up to 150 people, for performances, lectures, and community events.

It's envisaged that the former crown and civil courtrooms could be used for weddings, presentations, classes and meetings, while a kitchen on site would support catering for events.

There is a proposal for the upper floor to be redeveloped as a digital hub or office space, with its own entrance, suitable for a long-term tenant.

The masterplan also focuses on improving accessibility, with a new front entrance, fully accessible WCs, and a lift providing access to all areas.

Safety measures proposed include new escape routes and updated fire safety arrangements.

The plan points out that building’s main hall roof, which was previously damaged, will need to be rebuilt with new steel trusses, while there's potential for mechanical heating and cooling, heat pumps, and potentially solar panels, to be installed.

The surrounding area could also benefit from enhancement works as part of the plan.

The plan calls for the recently installed pedestrian crossing to be retained, as well as other traffic calming measures, including raised tables along Church Road. Public Electric Vehicle charging points and sustainable drainage solutions are also being considered.

The redevelopment aims to breathe new life into a much-loved historic building, providing an array of spaces that meet the needs of Daingean’s growing community.

The report puts the total cost of the enhancement and redevelopment of the building at an estimated €3,474,172.
