Mitchell leads the way for Harriers' marathon marvels

Twenty-four Tullamore Harriers athletes proudly represented the club in the 44th Dublin Marathon on Sunday last. Every athlete who took to the streets of Dublin deserves immense credit for their hard work, dedication and months of training - all having the last Sunday in October as their focus.

The Dublin marathon incorporates the National Marathon Championships and the Leinster Marathon Championships. The championship results will be published in due course, but it looks like some national and provincial medals will make their way to Tullamore Harriers AC.

The event started at Leeson Street Lower at approximately 8.45am with the first wave, followed by the other three waves. From here the runners tackled the challenging 26-mile course through the heart of Dublin, finishing at Mount Street Upper.

Despite rain showers and a strong breeze at times which wasn’t favourable for both competitors and supporters, the Tullamore Harriers squad delivered fantastic performances. The atmosphere was electric as always, with thousands of supporters lining the streets, cheering runners on every step of the way and providing a huge morale boost when it was needed most.

David McGlynn was the first Irish athlete to cross the finish line in sixth place, posting 2.11.01 while Ava Crean claimed the Irish women's national title on the day, finishing the race in a time of 2.34.12.

For Tullamore Harriers, the first finisher in the famous blue and white was Paul Mitchell with a superb 2.30.08. Paul ran alongside training buddy Mick Fogarty (Ferbane AC), with both men having excellent races. Next in close succession were fabulous performances by Stephen Murphy (2.34.01), Barry Minnock (2.37.31), and Michael O’Brien (2.41.40).

There were also some fantastic personal bests (PBs) recorded on the day, including Michael Brennan (2.46.13), Gary Whittle (3.00.16), Ollie Neary (3.01.31), and Helena Buckley (3.53.43).

All the club’s athletes have their own stories to tell, and each one deserves great recognition for their efforts at this year’s Dublin Marathon. Some may say “never again!”, but as the memories of the tough miles fade, the pride of the achievement will remain. A huge congratulations to all Tullamore Harriers members and to friends from surrounding clubs on an incredible day of running. Thank you to everyone who supported along the route and helped make it such a memorable occasion.
