Local Traveller group launches three-year strategic plan
The all-Ireland Traveller organisation Minceirs Whiden (Cant for Travellers talking) launched its Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2028 in Athlone earlier this week.
The launch, held on Tuesday, October 28, brought together directors, staff, and members of Minceirs Whiden, alongside representatives from other Traveller organisations across the country.
The day began with a presentation by Tullamore woman Maureen Ward, Interim Co-Ordinator for Minceirs Whiden, who outlined the three central themes of the plan: governance, advocacy, and resource management.
These pillars will guide the organisation’s work over the next three years, with a focus on building internal capacity to better meet the needs of the community.
The plan was officially launched by well-known Traveller activist Catherine Coffey O’Brien, who praised Minceirs Whiden’s vision and commitment to community-led change.
The day concluded with a workshop led by Patrick McDonagh of the No Shame project, which supports the open discussion of mental health within the Traveller community.
Speaking after the launch, Maureen Ward, Interim Co-Ordinator for Minceirs Whiden said: "We are delighted to launch our strategic plan today. It represents a collective vision for Minceirs Whiden and the wider Traveller Community.
"This plan is about building strength from within, to ensure that our organisation is equipped to represent our community on the issues that matter most, from political representation to mental health and everything in between, North and South.
"Today's launch, bringing Travellers together from across the country, shows the unity and determination in our community. We look forward to working with all our members and partner organisations to deliver on the promises of this plan," Ms Ward concluded.
Minceirs Whiden is based in the ACT Business Development Centre at Parnell Square in Athlone.
