Gardai pay tribute to retiring Superintendent with years of service in Midlands
An Garda Siochana has paid tribute to Superintendent John Lawless, who is retiring this week having served for many years in the Midlands, including spells stationed in Athlone, Birr and Tullamore.
"John has always been, first and foremost, a people person - approachable, fair, and deeply committed to community policing in its truest sense," said An Garda Siochana in Laois/Offaly.
Its tribute pointed out that Supt Lawless had served with distinction across many roles since joining the force, and he had worked in stations and units such as Irishtown, GNBCI, Mullingar, Athlone, Gort, Ballymote, Birr, Portlaoise, and Tullamore.
"Whether as Inspector or Superintendent, his leadership was defined by calm professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering belief in doing the right thing by people," stated the Garda tribute.
"From all of us across the Laois-Offaly Division, past and present, we extend our sincere thanks and best wishes to John on his retirement.
"His contribution to policing and to the communities he served will not be forgotten.
"Wishing you every happiness and good health in the years ahead, John — you’ve earned it."
Athlone Fianna Fáil councillor Frankie Keena was among those who extended his best wishes to Superintendent Lawless, writing: "Thank you for your service John and your ongoing support to a wide range of communities.
"Congratulations on your retirement and wishing you the very best wishes and health into the future."
