Adult learners share experiences at regional education and training forum

Adult learners from across Offaly and Laois had an opportunity to share their experiences and reflections of their education journey at a regional meeting of the National Further Education and Training (FET) Learner Forum in the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise on Wednesday.

The National FET Learner Forum is a collaborative initiative led by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation, in partnership with SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority, and local Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

Each year, thousands of learners across Ireland take part in regional forums, providing valuable insights into the diverse experiences and needs of adult learners nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Michelle Shanahan, FET Manager (Pathways) at Laois and Offaly ETB, said feedback from course participants "would help us understand how we can improve our service in the future.”

“We want to hear your honest opinions of how you are getting on in your courses, on what is working well for you and suggested areas for improvement," Ms Shanahan said.

Learners shared how inclusive and welcoming the forum was, with one participant describing it as “a safe space where everyone was free to voice their opinions.” Others highlighted the “feeling of community” and “kind and supportive staff” that contributed to open and honest discussions.

Learners also reflected on the importance of empathy, understanding and inclusion in education.

During the event, participants acknowledged the valuable role of their ETB’s Access and Learner Support Officers, particularly in providing examination supports and accommodations for learners with dyslexia, as well as the availability of sensory rooms in some centres.

PLC learners spoke positively about their experience in adult education, appreciating being treated as adults in a supportive learning environment.

Suggestions for improvement included upgrading older centre buildings, creating more dedicated social spaces and canteens for learners, enhancing coordination with local employers for work placements, and expanding financial and mental health supports.

If you are considering returning to education, you can find more information on the AONTAS website or explore the wide range of courses available through the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).
