WATCH: Offaly TD pleads for funding for 'generational talent' Alex Dunne

Offaly TD John Clendennen has urged the Government to step in with support for rising motorsport star Alex Dunne.

The Fine Gael politician described Dunne as “a generational talent on the cusp of Formula One, competing on the world stage with hundreds of millions of viewers yet little recognition and zero support from our national sporting bodies.”

He said that while Government has made “exceptional progress” in building pathways, participation, and high-performance programmes across mainstream sports, a new approach is needed to ensure elite athletes outside traditional codes are not left behind.

“We now need a framework that also supports world-class athletes outside the traditional codes, where Ireland has the potential to shine just as brightly,” he said.

Clendennen added that young talents like Dunne “deserve every opportunity to reach the pinnacle of their sport, and Ireland should be proud to back them.”
