Tullamore swimming cup returns home decades later for 'Cool Pool' book launch
The Carnival Cup was one of the main events at the Tullamore swimming galas which were held from 1950 to 1982.
The final winner of the trophy, in 1982, was Tullamore native Ronan Kelly.
Earlier this year, Ronan kindly returned the historic cup from his home in London for the launch of Cool Pool, the new book by Damien Byrne which tells the story of Tullamore Outdoor Pool.
Damien extended a special thanks to Ronan for returning the cup, which was originally presented to the Tullamore Swimming Club by Tullamore Soccer and Rugby Clubs.
Pat Dunne originally from William Street, Tullamore, attended the book signing in Tullamore Library following the launch, and brought along a photograph taken in 1976, the year he won the Carnival Cup.
The author of Cool Pool, Damien Byrne, recently met Pat near his home in Templemore to recreate the original photograph, an incredible 49 years later.
The results of all swimming gala events held at the Tullamore Pool from 1938 to 1982 are now available to view at www.tullamoreoutdoorpool.com.
If you previously won the Carnival Cup and would like a photograph taken with the trophy, please contact Damien. Contact details are available on the website.
