Offaly Gardai seize high-powered electric scooter and charge user with drink driving

Gardai in Offaly have reported the seizure of what they said was an illegal high-powered electric scooter on which a person is alleged to have driven while eight times over the drink driving limit.

Details of the incident were shared by Gardai on social media last night (Monday).

The post said the Offaly Roads Policing Unit had seized a scooter that was fitted with a 2000-watt motor, "making it illegal for use on a public road".

The rider on the scooter was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, with Gardai alleging the person was eight times over the legal alcohol limit.

"The individual has been charged and is due to appear before Tullamore District Court. The scooter has been seized for technical/PSV examination," said Gardai.

They issued the following reminders to the public:

* Not all electric scooters are legal for road use

* Drink driving laws apply to all vehicles

* High-powered scooters pose a serious risk to riders and other road users

and

* Road safety enforcement continues across the county.
