Offaly RPU seize high-powered e-scooter as driver eight times over alcohol limit
The Offaly Roads Policing Unit (RPU) has seized an illegal high-powered electric scooter after the rider was caught driving under the influence, over eight times the legal alcohol limit.
The incident occurred earlier this week during routine road safety enforcement operations in the county.
The scooter, equipped with a 2000-watt motor, was deemed unfit for public road use, as it exceeds the legal limit for electric vehicles.
The rider was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, and subsequent testing revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) more than eight times the legal limit, prompting an immediate arrest.
The individual, who has not been named, faces charges related to both the illegal use of the scooter and drink-driving. They are due to appear before Tullamore District Court in the coming weeks.
A spokesperson for the Offaly RPU emphasized the seriousness of the incident, urging the public to be aware of the following:
"Not all electric scooters are legal for use on public roads, drink-driving laws apply to all vehicles including electric scooters, and high-powered scooters pose a significant risk to both riders and other road users."
