Formula 2 driver Alex Dunne has been nominated for the RTÉ 'Young Sportsperson of the Year'

Dunne nominated for RTE 'Young Sportsperson of the Year'

Offaly's Formula 2 racing star Alex Dunne is one of seven nominees for the RTE 'Young Sportsperson of the Year'.

The Rodin Motorsport team member became the first Irish driver to win an F2 race, winning in both Bahrain and Italy. The Clonbollogue native would eventually finish the F2 championship season in fifth position.

Fellow Midlands sportsperson Patsy Joyce has also been nominated for the accolade.

The Mullingar boxer won a bronze medal at 55kg weight in his first World Boxing Championships in Liverpool in September.

Other nominees for the award include U20 400m runner Conor Kelly,  swimmer John Shortt, Shamrock Rovers footballer Michael Noonan, para swimmer Roisin Ni Riain and canoeist Sean Butterly.

The 'Young Sportsperson of the Year' award winner will be announced during the RTÉ Sports Awards to be televised live on RTÉ1 on Saturday night at 8.05pm.

The awards programme will be presented by Joanne Cantwell, Darragh Maloney and David Gillick.
