2027 timeline for proposed Birr primary schools amalgamation

A draft timeline of September 2027 has been set for the proposed amalgamation of two primary schools in Birr town into a single co-educational school.

The consultation process to amalgamate the Mercy Primary School in Townparks and St. Brendan's Boys Primary School on Moorpark Street is already underway, and it is understood that a number of meetings have already taken place between the Principals and Chairpersons of the Boards of Management with the Patron of the school and also with the parish.

The process of consultation to amalgamate both primary schools was led by the Patron at the request of both Boards of Management and with the support of the Parish. It is proposed that the new co-educational primary school would be Catholic in denomination and remain under the Patronage of the Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan.

A consultation meeting for parents of children attending both the Mercy Primary School and St. Brendan's Boys Primary is due to take place next month, at which a progress report will be given on the proposed amalgamation.

Meanwhile, the priests in Birr parish have asked parishioners to keep both school communities in their thoughts and prayers as they take the time to consider the future of their primary schools and proceed along the path towards amalgamation.
