John McGowan 12-hour endurance challenge returns for second year

The John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge returns for its second year this February Bank Holiday weekend.

The challenge, which takes place on Sunday, February 1, in Athlone Community College from 7am to 7pm, is an endurance fundraiser created in memory of the late John McGowan and organised by Athlone Triathlon Club.

John was an avid runner, and a lifelong member of the Tullamore Harriers. He passed away on February 8, 2025, following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease, which was fought with great dignity.

In its inaugural year, the event raised over €40,000 for two charities, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Athlone Family Resource Centre.

This year, organisers aim to build on the success of 2025, and are raising vital funds for three incredible local charities Samaritans Athlone & Midlands, Infinity Friends Athlone, and Athlone River Safety Awareness.

Participants can take part as a solo participant or as part of a relay team, choosing between cycling, running, or a mix of both.

In the Spinathon, a new guest instructor takes the stage every hour with fresh beats and energy to keep you moving. Runners can pick can set their own challenge for every hour, making the event accessible for all levels.

More than just a test of stamina, the John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge is about community, resilience, and fun. Whether you’re pedalling, running, or cheering on participants, every hour is a chance to make a difference.

An iDonate fundraising page set up for the John McGowan 12 Hour Challenge 2026 had already raised almost €10,000 at the time of going to press.
