"People’s strength is remarkable" says Edenderry SVP member as Offaly volunteers sought

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is appealing for new volunteers in Offaly to support individuals and families struggling with the rising cost of living, isolation and unexpected financial pressures.

SVP volunteers provide practical assistance and companionship, helping people to navigate difficult moments with dignity and peace of mind.

Sheila O'Meara, a visitation volunteer with St Brigid’s Conference in Edenderry, said one of the aspects of the work that stays with her is the resilience of those they support.

“One of the things that stays with me is the resilience of the people we meet – around 70–80% are single-parent families, and the strength they show is remarkable,” she said.

Ms O’Meara has been volunteering with SVP for almost 10 years and described the experience as a privilege.

"It’s been a real privilege to be invited into homes to listen, to understand the difficulties people have and to be able to support, advise and help people to improve their situations.

"With the help we receive from our donors we are in a very privileged position to be able to assist where there is need. It’s truly a case of how communities can support their own.”

SVP is currently seeking kind, reliable volunteers in Offaly who can offer even a small amount of time each week.

Opportunities include home visitation, child and family services, SVP retail roles supporting customers and sorting donations, and social housing roles for those with the right experience.

Volunteers are trained and supported, with roles matched to availability and interests.

SVP is inviting people across Offaly to step forward and strengthen their community. Those interested in volunteering can find out more and register their interest at svp.ie/volunteer.
