More than a gym: How The Unit is redefining fitness and community

As the New Year begins, many people across Offaly and Westmeath are looking for ways to improve their health, fitness and overall wellbeing. At The Unit Gym, based at Clara Sports & Leisure Centre, the focus goes far beyond treadmills and weights — it’s about building strength, confidence and community for people of all ages and abilities.

The Unit offers a fully equipped gym and weights room, alongside a growing timetable of group fitness classes including Pilates, yoga and the popular UNIT Hyrox-style training sessions. Whether someone is taking their first step into fitness or looking to push performance to the next level, the emphasis is on supportive coaching in a welcoming, non-intimidating environment. Age is never a barrier to improved fitness and their personal trainers are on hand to guide you at all times.

But The Unit is not just for adults. Families are a huge part of the story. Kids camps and birthday parties provide fun, active experiences that encourage teamwork, resilience and confidence. For teens and young adults, structured training and group sessions help build healthy habits that last well beyond January.

Community events also play a central role, with The Unit Challenge and outdoor team-based experiences bringing people together through shared physical and mental challenges. These events are increasingly popular with local clubs, schools and organisations looking for something different — and meaningful.

Adding to the experience is The Unit Café, a relaxed, modern space where members and visitors can enjoy an artisan coffee, protein shakes and healthy snacks. It’s a place to refuel, catch up and feel part of something bigger than a workout.

Looking ahead to 2026, The Unit has introduced a Baby & Mum hour each morning from 10am, creating a supportive space for new parents to return to movement, connection and routine.

At its core, The Unit is about more than fitness. It’s about unity, inclusion and helping people feel stronger — physically and mentally — in everyday life.
