'A serious road safety issue for every other road user'

Gardai in Offaly recently detected a motorist driving at 144km/hr, whilst disqualified from driving, and carrying 19 penalty points.

In a post on social media, Gardai said that members of the Offaly Roads Policing Unit recently detected the vehicle travelling at 144km/h on a motorway in wet and hazardous conditions.

"On inspection, the driver was found to be disqualified from driving and had accumulated 19 penalty points," the Garda post read.

"Speeding in poor weather significantly increases stopping distances and reduces vehicle control. When you add disqualification into the mix, it becomes a serious road safety issue for every other road user.

"Road safety is a shared responsibility. Slow down, drive to the conditions, and ensure you are legally entitled to be on the road," Gardai said.
