Brian Flynn

Offaly man appointed to Just Transition Commission

An Offaly man has been appointed to the Just Transition Commission for a three-year term.

Brian Flynn is a director and Chair of An Síolán, a community development company in west Offaly repurposing major buildings to meet evolving economic and social needs.

He is also a former member of the West Offaly Enterprise Fund, which created sustainable employment following power plant closures, and is currently the environmental representative of the PPN (Public Participation Network) on Offaly LCDC (Local Community Development Committee) and a promoter of community renewable energy projects.

He is replacing another Offaly man, Seamus Boland, on the commission.

The Just Transition Commission, chaired by Ali Sheridan, plays a key role in advising and supporting the Government to ensure that the move to a climate neutral economy is fair and benefits everyone.

The appointment of Mr Flynn as an independent expert will provide particular focus on rural and community development, the Government said.

Welcoming the Government’s approval of Mr Flynn, the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien, said: “I am delighted to welcome Brian as a new member of the Just Transition Commission of Ireland. Brian’s first-hand experience of living and working in a region heavily impacted by the decarbonisation of the energy sector will bring a specific perspective to the work of the Commission. His insights into the lived experience of impacted workers, as one himself, and his understanding of how the region overcame challenges to reinvent itself will provide unique perspective. Brian’s clear interest and commitment to rural and community development, will add to the wealth of expertise and experience within the Commission as it continues its very important role. I would also like to thank the outgoing Commissioner – Mr Seamus Boland – for his contribution to the Commission.”
