Gardai intercept drones believed to be used for prison deliveries

Gardaí recently intercepted two drones believed to be delivering contraband into a Midlands prison.

Gardai in Portlaoise, supported by the Divisional Drugs Unit and Detective Unit, recently carried out the successful operation targeting the use of drones into the Midlands and Portlaoise Prison complex.

On March 2, Gardaí intercepted a drone believed to be destined for the prison grounds. The drone was carrying a package containing suspected drugs, mobile phones and other prohibited items. A person was arrested and subsequently charged.

On March 3, a second drone, believed to be connected to this activity, was located in close proximity to the prison. This drone also had a package containing contraband material attached.

Gardai said the incidents highlighted its ongoing efforts, working in partnership with the Irish Prison Service, to prevent the smuggling of drugs, phones and other harmful materials into our prison system.

Gardaí in Portlaoise said they greatly appreciate the continued support of the local community. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity involving drones, particularly in areas close to the prison complex.

If you observe unusual drone activity or suspicious behaviour, please contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100 or any Garda Station or call 999 or 112
