St Mary's Youth Centre duo honoured at Garda Youth Awards

St Mary's Youth Centre duo Ava Meredith and Mikey McDonagh were recently honoured at Laois/Offaly Garda Youth Awards.

The Junior Leaders were among ten Offalians to be recognised at the ceremony, which took place recently at The Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise, and honoured young people from the Laois/Offaly Garda Division by presenting them with a Garda Youth Award in the company of their family and peers.

A Garda Youth Award recognises the outstanding achievement of young people between the ages of 13 and 21 years who have undertaken exceptional work in their local communities or who have shown great determination in their own lives.

The stories of the winners on the night were emotional, inspiring and remarkable. They served to demonstrate the strength of character which our young people possess and leaves us in no doubt that our future is in safe hands.

An Garda Síochána has said it is delighted to award these young people for their outstanding achievements and their contribution to their local communities. Recipients were honoured with nineteen prestigious awards in three categories.

Ava took home an Individual Award for her outstanding volunteer work with St Mary's Youth Centre, giving her time every week to support after-school clubs, Easter camps and summer camps. Her commitment has been unwavering.

Even when she began employment, Ava continued to volunteer. Ava has completed every training opportunity available to her, and works closely with youth leaders to plan activities that engage and encourage club members. Through her commitment, Ava has become a powerful role model for other young people.

Mikey received a Special Achievement Award on the night. He has been part of St Mary's Youth Club since the age of seven, and has overcome significant personal challenges.

As a young Traveller male, Mikey has navigated experiences that required courage, resilience and self-belief. He faced difficulties that led him to leave school early. Mikey returned to education through Tullamore CTC, completing training courses and undertaking work placement within the club.

Within the club he plays a trusted leadership role. His positivity and willingness to help have influenced hundreds of young people, as he continues to inspire other teenagers to join the club and step forward as junior leaders.
