New fire service learning centre opened in Offaly

A new €4.4m fire service learning and development centre was officially opened in Tullamore on Friday.

The project, provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage through the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, was unveiled by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne

It comprises a state-of-the-art training facility designed to support the delivery of the modern training methods to the fire service nationally.

The centre provides a modern, purpose-built environment for scenario-based training across multiple disciplines.

It is seen as strengthening the national network of fire service training locations and supports best practice in emergency response.

The new centre includes a drill training ground for live drills and operational exercises, a modern lecture room equipped with advanced audio-visual and instructional technologies, and a dedicated briefing room designed for operational planning and exercise preparation.

It also features a flexible room to support group training, workshops, and structured learning activities, high-quality changing facilities to meet staff needs throughout training days, and a specialised decontamination area to ensure the safe handling, cleaning, and maintenance of PPE and equipment.

Since becoming operational, the Learning and Development Centre has already welcomed fire service crews from across the country, ranging from Mayo to Wicklow, reflecting its strategic central location and the strong national demand for high-quality training spaces.

Addressing the official opening Cathaoirleach Cllr John Leahy said: “This new Learning Centre is an outstanding asset for the Fire Service, not only in Offaly but across Ireland. The investment made here has delivered a facility that will support training, preparedness, and safety for many years to come. It is a proud day for Offaly to host such an advanced national resource.

Offaly Chief Fire Officer Eoin O'Ceilleachair said: “The opening of this centre represents a major step forward for firefighter training. The combination of practical outdoor drill space and high-quality indoor learning facilities allows us to deliver instruction to the highest professional standards. This investment ensures our firefighters have the environment they need to train safely, effectively, and in line with modern operational requirements”

Minister Browne outlined: “The development of this Learning Centre reflects strong collaboration between the Department, the Council and the National Directorate. It demonstrates the clear commitment contained within the Programme for Government to strengthen proficiency in emergency services by investing in infrastructure that supports communities nationwide.”

Chief Executive of Offaly County Council Eoghan Ryan said Offaly County Council looked forward to welcoming fire service personnel from across the country.
