Tullamore talk on 'ungardening' to help boost biodiversity
Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group is holding its first gardening-themed presentation, entitled 'Ungardening for Biodiversity', in Tullamore library in April.
The event, at 6pm on Thursday, April 9, will involve a presentation by Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer of Offaly County Council.
With spring taking hold, Mr Whelan's talk will explore how simple changes in everyday gardening practices can make a big difference for local wildlife.
He will look at practical ways people can help create habitats for birds, bees and bats by choosing wildlife‑friendly plants, reducing chemical use, and providing food and shelter throughout the year.
"Whether you have a large garden, a small outdoor space or a balcony, this session will show how you can help support biodiversity right on your doorstep," said Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group.
The event will take place upstairs in Tullamore Library at 6pm on April 9, and bookings can be made for free on Eventbrite.
The voluntary group's chairperson, Gaelan Elliffe, said: "We are very pleased to have Ricky present on this topic. I'm looking forward to his presentation as he has a great depth of knowledge on the topic.
"Later in the year our group plan to have more gardening-themed presentations, and in May we plan to hold events for bike week and biodiversity week.
"We encourage people to come along and connect with others interested in learning about nature and promoting sustainability.
"Our group is building a community of people passionate about nature with both sharing information and volunteering important to our group."
At Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group's recent climate café on March 26 in Tullamore Library some interesting conversations took place with participants discussing cycling in Offaly.
Attendees also shared information from a recently attended composting workshop with the possibility of community composting being discussed. The lifespan of products and repairing items was also discussed.
