Blueball postal issue highlighted in Dáil

Local TD Tony McCormack has raised concerns in the Dáil over what he said was an ongoing delay in reinstating full An Post services at Doolan’s shop in Blueball — an issue that has now been unresolved since before Christmas.

Deputy McCormack told the Dáil that the prolonged absence of services is causing real hardship for residents, particularly elderly and vulnerable people who depend on having essential postal and financial services available locally.

Deputy McCormack said the length of time being taken to restore the service is becoming increasingly difficult to understand. He pointed out that An Post has previously acknowledged that the level of business conducted at Doolans exceeded that of many of its own full post offices nationwide.

The Offaly TD expressed concern that the continued delay risks forcing customers to travel to other towns and become accustomed to using alternative post offices, which could ultimately undermine the case for reopening the local outlet.

Speaking after raising the matter in the Dáil, Deputy McCormack said he has called on Government to facilitate urgent engagement with the relevant Minister to ensure the service is restored without further delay.

“This situation has been ongoing for far too long and local people deserve clarity and action,” he said. “Essential services such as this are a lifeline in rural communities, and I will continue to press for a swift and positive resolution.”

Deputy McCormack has been working with local representatives and the community to seek a solution and has pledged to maintain pressure until full services are reinstated.
