Ferbane's Paddy Claffey turns 105!
By Rebekah O'Reilly
A remarkable milestone took place recently as Ferbane native Paddy Claffey celebrated his 105th birthday.
Widely regarded as Ireland’s oldest man, Paddy reached the landmark age last week, having been born on April 17, 1921.
A well-known and much-loved figure locally, Paddy was recently honoured as Grand Marshal of the Clara St Patrick’s Day parade, reflecting the deep respect in which he is held across the community.
The birthday was marked with a quiet gathering at his home with just his close family members.
He also received a lovely card all the way from Australia sent by his grandson Shane Rooney.
"Days like these are hitting me hard, being over 17,000 miles away and longing to be home. I’m so thankful for FaceTime," Shane said.
"Seeing his live reaction opening up the card today was special.
He’s my inspiration and my reason to keep going."
A larger celebration is planned for early May, when up to 40 relatives and friends are expected to come together to mark the occasion.
The youngest of ten children, Paddy spent his life farming and working locally, rarely travelling far from home and remaining closely tied to his community.
Known for his sharp mind, warm sense of humour and love of conversation, he continues to enjoy reasonably good health despite his great age.
A widower for more than two decades, he and his late wife Margaret were well known on the local dancing scene, travelling widely for set dances and raising their family in Noggusboy.
