Dunne returns to F2 Grand Prix action in Miami

Offaly racing driver Alex Dunne returns to F2 action in Miami this weekend.

The Clonbollogue native will be hoping for a more positive raceday experience in Florida on Sunday following a forced early retirement at the Melbourne Grand Prix in March.

The Alpine recruit was forced to retire after making contact with Rodin Motorsport teammate Martinius Stenshorne during the feature race in Melbourne and as a result he will have a grid penalty for this, the second F2 Championship Grand Prix of the 2026 season.

In a post on his social media channels Dunne said he was "excited to be back after a long break" for race week in Miami.

Drivers will contest 132 laps during the Miami feature race covering a course distance of 173kms.

Prior to the return of the F2 championship this weekend, Sky Sports commentator David Croft, speaking at an event in Dublin, told Balls.ie that Dunne was a "diamond" in the sport.

He said that the lack of security for Alpine's current second driver Franco Colapinto could see Dunne "get a shot at Formula One sooner than he may have at McLaren".

"Once he stays on the right side of the race stewards, Dunne's path to F1 could be becoming ever clearer.

"I think he's just got to keep doing what he's doing and show that he is that diamond waiting to be on that Formula One grid.

"I'd love to see him on the grid, but I don't know how it's going to go, I really don't," Croft stated.
