Cowen marks Europe Day with visits to Offaly schools
Fianna Fáil MEP for the Midlands North-West, Barry Cowen, has marked Europe Day with visits to schools in Offaly, during which he highlighted the opportunities the European Union (EU) provides for young people across Ireland.
MEP Cowen visited Tubber National School and Oaklands Community College Edenderry, where he met with students and staff to discuss Ireland’s role in the EU and the wide range of opportunities available through its membership.
The visits formed part of ongoing engagement with schools participating in EU-focused initiatives, including the Blue Star Programme and the European Parliament Ambassador School Programme, both of which aim to deepen students’ understanding of how the European Union works and how it impacts their daily lives.
During his discussions with students, MEP Cowen pointed to the many benefits of EU membership, including the ability to live, work and travel freely across member states, access to education and training opportunities such as Erasmus+, and the strong export markets that support Irish jobs and businesses.
He said it was particularly encouraging to see the level of interest and engagement among students, noting that the next generation will play a key role in shaping Europe’s future.
Mr Cowen added that initiatives, like those underway in both schools, are essential in ensuring young people are informed, confident and ready to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them as EU citizens.
Speaking following the visits, MEP Cowen said:
“It was a pleasure to visit both Tubber National School and Oaklands Community College and to meet such engaged and enthusiastic students.
“Europe offers real and tangible opportunities for young people across Ireland - whether that’s the chance to study abroad through Erasmus, to travel freely, or to build a career across the European Union.
“What struck me most was the level of awareness and curiosity among the students about how the EU works and the role Ireland plays within it. That is hugely encouraging.
“Programmes like the Blue Star initiative and the European Parliament Ambassador School Programme are vital in bringing Europe closer to young people and helping them see the opportunities that exist for them in the years ahead," MEP Cowen said.
