Tullamore school recognised as School of Sanctuary

A Tullamore school has officially been recognised as a School of Sanctuary.

Schools of Sanctuary- Ireland’ is a national initiative which recognises schools that actively promote inclusion, equality, kindness and welcome for all, particularly for families and children coming from different countries, cultures and backgrounds.

The title is awarded by the organisation School of Sanctuary Ireland and is based on three key pillars: learn, action, share.

The award recognises Charleville National School's commitment to creating a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment where every child and family feels valued and respected.

"Through this journey, the pupils learned about kindness, empathy and the importance of making everyone feel that they belong," said a statement by Charleville NS.

The School of Sanctuary team visited Charelville National School on Thursday, May 7, where they were "blown away by the warmth, energy, and genuine spirit of inclusion that filled every corner of the school".

"From the classrooms to the corridors, it was crystal clear that sanctuary isn't just a goal; it is a way of life. Three outstanding things we saw included classrooms where students learn about each other’s countries, cultures, and migration, helping to build empathy and understanding from a young age.

"There is also a Buddy Chair where students who feel lonely or overwhelmed can sit, and another student will join them, so no one feels alone. In addition, sensory rooms are in place to support children with special needs."
