Urgent need to continue STEM Officer role in Offaly

The loss of this role would be a significant setback for the Midlands says the TD

An Independent TD for Offaly, Carol Nolan, has raised the urgent need to retain the dedicated STEM Officer for Offaly County Council, emphasising its critical role in supporting education, skills development, and economic growth in the region.

Building on her recent engagement on the issue, she also visited the LOETB Midlands Skills Centre in Tullamore earlier this week. “I was delighted to visit the LOETB Midlands Skills Centre, Tullamore earlier today where Minister Lawless was present to view the fantastic facilities. It was lovely to meet some of the apprentices who are undertaking apprenticeship courses run by LOETB,” said Deputy Nolan.

However, speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday last, Deputy Nolan reiterated calls for sustained funding and the immediate securing of the STEM Officer position.

The role, previously supported through EU Just Transition Funding, faces uncertainty as that funding stream ends in June. “Offaly’s young people and our wider community deserve every opportunity to thrive in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A dedicated STEM Officer delivers hands-on programmes, supports schools, libraries, and community events like robotics workshops, and helps bridge the skills gap that our region needs for future jobs,” said Deputy Nolan.

She added: “The loss of this role would be a significant setback for the Midlands, where STEM initiatives have been leading the way in engaging students and promoting innovation.”

Deputy Nolan has urged the government to explore all possible national or local funding solutions, including potential use of surpluses from training funds, to retain and expand this position rather than allowing it to lapse.

She exhorted: “We cannot afford to let vital STEM support disappear just as we push for a more skilled, competitive workforce. I am calling on Offaly County Council, the Department of Education, and relevant Ministers to prioritise funding for this appointment immediately,” Deputy Nolan concluded.
