Offaly men encouraged to take one step at a time

Men across Offaly are being encouraged to take some time for themselves this June as part of Men’s Health Week 2026, which runs from Monday, June 15, to Sunday, June 21.

This year's theme, "One Step at a Time", is a reminder that improving your health doesn't have to involve major changes. Instead, Men’s Health Week is encouraging men and boys to focus on small, practical steps that can make a real difference to their physical and mental wellbeing.

Whether it's getting more active, connecting with others, learning something new, or simply taking time to talk, a wide range of events are taking place across Offaly throughout the week.

Activities include social walks, walking football, health talks, kayaking, drop-in cafés, film screenings and community events designed to help men get involved, meet others and prioritise their wellbeing.

One of the highlights of the programme is Mental Health Ireland’s Dips for Health at Banagher Pool on Saturday, June 13, from 9am to 11am, promoting the benefits of cold-water, social connection and spending time in nature.

Men’s Health Week is celebrated internationally and aims to raise awareness of preventable health issues affecting men, encourage healthier lifestyle choices and support the early detection of health difficulties in men.

The week has been coordinated locally by the Offaly Men’s Health Week Working Group, which includes representatives from health, community and voluntary organisations across the county.

Caroline Brickland, HSE Health Promotion and Improvement Officer said: "Men often put their own health and wellbeing on the long finger while focusing on work, family and other responsibilities. Men’s Health Week is an opportunity to take a small step for yourself, connect with others and access information and support in a relaxed and welcoming environment."

A full schedule of events is available by contacting Offaly Local Development Company on 057 935 2467 or emailing info@offalyldc.ie. Copies of the programme can also be collected from local libraries throughout Offaly. For more information on Men’s Health Week, visit the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland website, www.mhfi.org
