Fusion Cup a highlight of successful Refugee Week in Offaly

The Local Authority Integration Team of Offaly County Council, in partnership with a range of local organisations, successfully delivered a vibrant programme of events to mark Refugee Week 2026 under the theme of ‘Courage’.

The week, which ran from June 15 to 21, showcased the rich diversity of the Offaly migrant community and highlighted the positive contributions being made across the county.

A standout event of the week was the Fusion Cup 5-a-side soccer blitz, held on Wednesday, June 17, at Tullamore Town Football Club’s facilities in Leah Victoria Park, Axis Business Park.

Teams representing African, Asian and Ukrainian communities competed in a series of matches, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.

The competition concluded with a penalty shootout, with OSG Sharks emerging as winners of the much sought-after Fusion Cup.

The Local Authority Integration Team acknowledged the support of key partners in delivering this successful event.

Offaly Civil Defence provided an on-site first responder presence, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all participants.

Matches were overseen by coaches from the Football Association of Ireland, while the Sport for Empowerment division of Offaly Sports Partnership played an integral role in the planning and delivery of the event.

Sincere thanks were extended to the Chairperson and Committee of Tullamore Town F.C. for the use of their excellent facilities. Appreciation was also expressed to all participating teams, whose enthusiasm and sportsmanship contributed to a memorable occasion.

In addition to the Fusion Cup, a range of inclusive events took place across the county during the week.

These included a ‘Creative Art’ workshop in Edenderry on Thursday, 18 June, and a Family Yoga event which was well attended and positively received by participants. The ‘Reading Heroes’ initiative, delivered in partnership with Offaly Libraries, visited schools throughout the county.

The programme promoted diversity and inclusion through storytelling, with children engaging in stories celebrating different cultures and experiences. Each child received a book to take home, encouraging continued reading and shared learning within families.

Overall, Refugee Week 2026 in Offaly was marked by strong participation, collaboration and community spirit. The Local Authority Integration Team confirmed that planning is already underway to build on this year’s success for Refugee Week 2027.
